Diep IO

Some games look like nothing and steal everything — your lunch break, your evening, your “just one more run.” That’s diep.io: a circle with a cannon, shooting squares, then triangles, then pentagons, then other players. Ten minutes later you’re level 45 with a drone swarm. Here’s how to get there fast.

The 30-Second Pitch: What Actually Happens in There

Spawn in. Shoot shapes (polygons) for XP. Level up. Spend stat points. Evolve into nastier tank classes. Fight — or dodge — other players. Die. Respawn and do it better. You learn by dying, which is honestly the fastest teacher this game has.

Squares Today, Overlord Tomorrow: The Leveling Loop

Master this rhythm and you stop being cannon fodder.

Step 1: Farm Polygons Like Your Life Depends on It

It kind of does. Yellow squares give small XP, red triangles give more, and the fat purple pentagons give a ton. Early on, hide from other tanks and only shoot shapes. The Pentagon Nest in the map’s center is the best XP farm in the game — and its most dangerous neighborhood.

Step 2: Spend Every Stat Point Like a Pro

Each level hands you points to spread across eight stats: Health Regen, Max Health, Body Damage, Bullet Speed, Bullet Penetration, Bullet Damage, Reload, and Movement Speed. Your arrangement is called a build. Veterans warn against one classic trap: spreading points evenly makes you mediocre at everything. Pick a lane — glass cannon (all bullet stats) or rammer (Max Health, Body Damage, Movement Speed) — and commit.

Step 3: Hit the Three Big Milestones

At levels 15, 30, and 45 you evolve your tank class — the real progression. Level 45 is the cap, so every run is a race to 45. Past level 27, points slow to one every two levels, which is why late game is about protecting what you’ve built.

The Class Tree: Your Real First Decision

At level 15 you pick one of four paths, and that choice branches all the way to your endgame. Here’s the honest version.

Level 15 — Pick Your Playstyle

Twin doubles your barrels for bullet spam. Sniper trades fire rate for range and punch. Machine Gun fires fast and wild. Flank Guard watches your back. Secret: stay a plain Tank until level 30 to unlock the Smasher, a cannonless spinning wrecking ball.

Level 30 — The Power Spike

This is where tanks get personalities: the Destroyer fires one enormous, near-one-shot bullet; the Overseer trades bullets for controllable drones; the Assassin becomes a long-range menace; the Tri-Angle line goes fast and hits hard. At level 30, other players start fearing you.

Level 45 — The Endgame Kings

The final tier is a hall of fame: the Overlord commands eight drones, the Ranger snipes from off-screen, the Spread Shot fills the screen with near-undodgeable bullets, and the Hybrid mixes destroyer firepower with a drone sidekick. Stay Machine Gun to 45 for the Sprayer — a bullet hose with no equal. The community has never agreed on a strongest class, and that’s the point.

Builds: The Secret Language Good Players Speak

Ask a veteran diep.io player for their build and you’ll get a string of numbers like 0/5/0/7/7/7/7/0 — the eight stats in order. That code tells you everything: glass cannon, rammer, sniper nest-farmer. Two quality-of-life tricks the pros use: hold U while clicking stat upgrades to queue them in advance, and hold M to tell the game to max out a stat automatically.

Game Modes, Ranked From Chillest to Cruelest

2 Teams and 4 Teams are the friendliest — base guardian drones let you level in relative peace. Start here. Free For All is the classic everyone-hunts-everyone chaos, best for testing builds. Maze adds walls and becomes an ambush simulator where rammers and Destroyers rule. Tag converts kills into teammates, Domination is objective play, and Sandbox is a private playground for testing builds. Battle Royale rotates in when the servers feel spicy.

The Only Controls That Actually Matter

You can learn the full game in six lines:

  • WASD or arrow keys — move your tank
  • Mouse — aim; left click — shoot
  • E — auto-fire (your trigger finger will thank you)
  • 1–8 — upgrade individual stats; hold U to queue them, M to max them
  • Y — toggle auto-upgrade and open the class tree preview
  • C — toggle auto-spin, handy for covering all angles while ramming

7 Ways New Players Die in the First Minute

Learn these from a page instead of from experience:

  1. Hunting players at level 8. Farm shapes until at least level 15.
  2. Going “balanced.” Half bullets, half health beats nobody. Commit to a build.
  3. Chasing a kill into the unknown. That fleeing tank has friends, and they’re all behind the fog.
  4. Ramming without health. Ramming costs you health too — you need Max Health and Body Damage to make it pay.
  5. Ignoring the minimap edges. Corners are coffins. Keep an escape route open.
  6. Poking a boss. Those giant tanks end runs in seconds.
  7. Standing still to upgrade stats. Queue upgrades with U or do it in a quiet corner, never mid-fight.

Why It’s Still Running Strong After a Decade

Built by Matheus Valadares — the same developer behind agar.io, the game that started the whole .io craze — diep.io launched in April 2016 and never left. It’s free, runs in any browser with no download and no account, and has iOS and Android versions. Thousands still play daily because no two runs are alike: the class tree, the builds, and the human opponents make every lobby a fresh puzzle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is diep.io free to play?

Yes — completely free in your browser, no download, no account, no payment walls. Mobile versions exist for iOS and Android.

How do I level up fast?

Farm shapes before fighting players. Triangles beat squares, pentagons beat everything, and the Pentagon Nest in the map’s center is the fastest XP in the game — if you can survive the traffic. Avoid other tanks until at least level 15.

What is the best tank class?

There isn’t one, and that’s the honest answer the community gives. The Destroyer dominates close range, the Overlord rules drone play, the Ranger owns long range, and the Spread Shot is a bullet wall. Pick the class that fits your aim and your patience, then learn its counters.

Can I play diep.io on mobile or at school?

Yes on both. It runs in any modern mobile browser, and dedicated iOS and Android apps exist. Because it’s lightweight and browser-based, it works on most school or office networks through the official site or any trusted game portal.

Who made the game?

Brazilian developer Matheus Valadares created it in 2016 as the follow-up to his viral hit agar.io. It’s been maintained and published over the years by Miniclip (mobile), Addicting Games, and VexxusArts.
