Backrooms

▶ Tap to Play Backrooms

Backrooms drops you into the internet’s most famous nightmare: endless yellow rooms, buzzing fluorescent lights, and something hunting you through the halls. Your mission is simple — find the exit or grab every video tape, then get out before it finds you. No weapons, no map. Just your ears and your nerve.

What Is Backrooms?

The backrooms started as a creepy internet legend — the idea that you can slip out of reality into an endless maze of empty, humming office rooms. This game turns that legend into a first-person escape challenge you play right in your browser. Each level drops you somewhere in the yellow maze with one job: find the exit door, or collect the set number of video tapes hidden through the rooms.

The catch is that you are not alone in there. A strange creature roams the halls, and it is looking for you. If it catches you, the level ends and you start over. Built in Unity 3D, the movement feels smooth and the hallways stretch in every direction, exactly like the stories describe. Every corner could hide a tape — or the hunter.

Your Escape Plan in 5 Phases

Winning here is not about speed. It is about having a plan and sticking to it. Here is the plan that works.

Phase 1: Get your bearings

When a level starts, do not run. Stand still for a few seconds and look around. Pick out landmarks — a broken light, a pillar, a weird stain on the wallpaper. The maze looks the same everywhere, so these little markers are the only map you will ever get.

Phase 2: Move with purpose

Walk the halls in a pattern instead of wandering. Clear one area fully before pushing deeper. Use WASD to move and Space to jump over low obstacles. Sprinting in random directions just gets you lost faster — and louder.

Phase 3: Grab the tapes

Video tapes are your ticket out of most levels. They hide in side rooms, corners, and dead ends. Check every alcove, and keep a mental count of how many you still need. Nothing is worse than thinking you are done and realizing one tape is still out there.

Phase 4: Break line of sight

The moment you sense the hunter — a sound, a flicker, a shape at the end of the hall — do not freeze. Run, and break corners immediately. The creature loses you when it cannot see you, so put walls between you and it, then go quiet.

Phase 5: Find the exit

Once the tapes are collected or you spot the exit door, commit. Take the most direct safe route and do not stop to explore. Most players get caught in the last thirty seconds because they relax too early. You are not out until you are out.

Know Your Hunter

The creature hunting you is faster than it looks and quieter than you expect. It patrols the halls in loose loops, which means doubling back through an area you already cleared is risky — it may have wandered in behind you. Listen constantly: footsteps and strange sounds tell you which direction it is moving.

Never run in a straight line down a long hall with the hunter behind you. You will not outrun it. Instead, duck into a side room, cut across its patrol path at an angle, and keep moving. Standing still in the open is the worst option — if it sees you standing there, it is already too late.

Tape Hunting: Where They Hide

Video tapes love the places you do not want to go: dead-end rooms, dark corners, and the far side of big open areas. Make a habit of sweeping each room’s edges before moving on. A quick jump with Space can also help you spot tapes sitting on low ledges or behind furniture.

Work in zones. Fully clear the rooms near your start before venturing far, so you always have a familiar area to retreat to. And remember the count — each level tells you how many tapes you need, so there is no excuse for leaving one behind.

5 Mistakes That Get You Caught

1. Sprinting everywhere. Noise draws the hunter. Move quickly but with control.

2. Ignoring sound cues. Your ears are your radar. Playing muted is playing blind.

3. Backtracking carelessly. Cleared rooms are not safe rooms. Check before you stroll back through.

4. Grabbing tapes without looking. Always scan the room first. A tape sitting in the open is sometimes bait.

5. Panicking in dead ends. If you get cornered, do not spin in circles. Pick the nearest exit path and commit to it.
